We received positive feedback about the care people received in the home. Staff were seen talking with people nicely and it was clear people who used the service were comfortable in the presence of staff. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice. Best interest decisions and capacity assessments had been completed for people who used the service. Where required, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguard applications had been submitted to the relevant assessing authority. There was dedicated staff in the home to provide a varied activities programme.

Certificates of training showed that a broad range of learning modules were provided for the staff team and those we spoke with provided us with some good examples of learning they had completed. However, the training matrix was not up to date, in order to reflect the current level of training provided. Staff we spoke with were able to discuss the needs of people well and were confident in reporting any concerns they may have had about the welfare of those who lived at Sandy Banks. Legal consent had been obtained for some areas of care and treatment.

We received very positive feedback about the registered manager and the improvements she had made in the home. EAC sees itself, and this website, as one source of ‘housing options’ information and advice for older people and their families. But there are many other organisations providing valuable services, both locally and nationally. Daily help, including personal care, is available on site and one or more meals are available daily in a dining room or restaurant. Additional facilities are also common – for example hairdressing salons, hobby rooms and gyms.

Feedback and questionnaires had been completed and we saw evidence that staff and relative meetings were taking place. Family members told us the home involved them in decisions and kept up to date about their relatives care. However, one person said they would like more updates about the care their relative received. Care files for people who used the service had detailed care planning and risk assessments in place, which provided up to date information about how to support their individual needs, choices and likes.
The Scottish Care Inspectorate is the official regulator for care services in Scotland. Those run by private operators more often focus on lifestyle, with help and care services discretely available to buy if or when required. Housing-with-care is a recent but natural evolution of retirement housing to provide an environment capable of enabling older people to maintain their independence even if they become physically or mentally frail. People were supported to eat their meals in a timely manner.
As with hotels, the cost of living in a care home varies widely according to its location, the size of your room or suite, and the facilities on offer. There is often a substantial difference between fees charged to those who can afford the costs themselves and those who receive help from their Local Authority. A majority of homes aim to cater for both, but some target only one or the other. With a few exceptions, accommodation in a care home cannot be bought or rented like retirement housing.
